Moving To SourceMod
« on: May 06, 2010, 06:34:01 pm »
We're switching from Mani (our current admin plugin) to SourceMod. Here's the long and short of why we're doing so:

1) There's an exploit in Mani that certain users have been taking advantage of that allows them to crash our server.
2) Tests so far indicate that running SourceMod rather than Mani helps the server perform better.
3) Tests so far indicate that running SourceMod rather than Mani removes the instability we were experiencing with the VIP mod.
4) SourceMod is more extensible than Mani, and provides us with some better options for maintaining the server.
5) Using SourceMod allows us to make use of some better anti-cheat tools.
6) SourceMod integrates better with our new statistics package (Psychostats).

Members with admin privileges:
The SourceMod admin menu should be easy enough for you to figure out... although there is one thing you should be aware of. Where before you bound a key like so to access the menu:
Code: [Select]
bind p admin
You must now bind it as follows:
Code: [Select]
bind p sm_admin
A small change, but one you will have to make. You will also need to re-bind any other admin keys you'd set up, but you should be able to access everything just fine from the menu.

Good catch - you still have that ability, but it wasn't in the menu. I've added it back.

Not to mention, if you need any custom plugins I can code them for sourcemod.  ;) Sourcemod is written in Small, which is a derivative of C. I wrote plugins back in the day for AMXmod (also a mod written in Small) for CS 1.6. The 2 I publicly released were Awp Limiter and AFK Manager.

P.S. If you are talking about that exploit that spams the server with some sort of command repeatedly and rapidly until the server crashes I know someone who wrote a plugin (I believe in ES) that catches it and eliminates it. I could see if I could get it. That would only be necessary if you wanted to stay with Mani though.

I have to admit that I preferred the Python approach that ES took... at least I can edit a python script without having to figure out how to re-compile it.

ES is convenient because but its not a programming language its a script. There would be instances where coding something in ES would be highly inefficient over making a plug-in for SM. That has always been the downfall for ES. Also ES has a much more difficult time with more complex mathematical computation. SM used to have a comparison somewhere. I'll have to see if I can dig it up around here.

For most of the small uses ES is used for its pretty minuet differences. I wouldn't go writing a whole huge mod with it though.

I understand all that, and it doesn't change a thing about what I was saying :) I hate having to compile stuff, it was easier to tweak people's code when I just had to go edit a file and then upload it back to the server.

Do people get stuck that often? Because that's the only time you should've been using it :)

Yeah... slap has always been sorta useless. And admins usually become annoying "multislapping" people when all they have to do is slay. :-p

We do have a few issues still.. Like when the bots are enabled and the mapvote comes up.. it crashes the server. Alltalk button don't actually work, we have to type it in manually.

Yep, I'm working through those to try and resolve them. Sorry, but there are only so many things we could've expected to uncover in a test environment, so there are going to be some hiccups. Ultimately, though, we'll be better off.
